Iris van Nuland

Iris van Nuland (2002) from Oss received her first violin lessons at the music school Muzelinck at the end of 2008 and was admitted to the talent class there in June 2011.
Throughout her secondary school years, she was an external student at the School for Young Talent at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, alongside her regular school in Oss. For the first few years, she received lessons there every Saturday from violin teacher Koosje van Haeringen, and from June 2017 from Peter Brunt, principal violin instructor in classical music.
After obtaining her pre-university diploma (VWO) in 2019, she took a gap year to focus extensively on violin studies. In September 2020, she began her classical violin studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Peter Brunt. Since September 2023, Iris has continued her bachelor’s studies in classical violin under principal teacher Maria Milstein. In 2024, she earns her bachelor’s degree with a final grade of 10 cum laude. From September 2024, Iris begins her master’s degree in classical violin at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under principal teacher Maria Milstein.

Since 2023, she has played on a Nicolò Amati violin from the 17th century, on loan from Ronald Hoogeveen, former concertmaster of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Her bow is a German golden bow by Georg Walter Renz (a 1930 Heinrich Knopf copy).

In 2024, Iris and the Otilka Quartet won second prize in the IX International Music Competition Triomphe de l’Art in Brussels.
In 2023, Iris was awarded the Violin Scholarship from Het Kersjes Fonds, one of the Netherlands’ largest private music funding bodies. The Kersjes Fund annually awards scholarships and prizes to exceptional Dutch musical talents. See also the press release.
In 2022, Iris won third prize and the performance prize in the Oskar Back final of the Dutch Violin Competition, the leading competition for young violin talent. The jury commented: “She plays with soloistic flair. She shows boldness and personality.”

In 2020, Iris won the National Final of the prestigious Princess Christina Competition, the most important award for young classical musicians. The jury described her as “A lioness on the violin.”
In 2016, Iris won the RTL4 TV program Superkids.
In 2013, Iris, along with cellist Emma van Schadewijk as Duo Decivo, won the Concertgebouw Amsterdam Talent Hunt.

Iris has also won first prizes at the Muzelinck music school, the Maassluis Music Week (2012 and 2013), the Kunstrally CrOss, and the Princess Christina Competition (2015 and 2020).
